I run a tree company in New Jersey and buy apartments in Alabama.
People usually have questions about that.
The business
My husband and I own Alpine Tree Service, a $5M+ tree company in New Jersey. Trucks, crews, payroll, insurance, and customers calling at 5 a.m. after a storm. Running it taught me how to hire, how to budget for the things that break, and how to stay calm when everything goes sideways at once. It’s also how I got into real estate: Alpine outgrew its office, and the building we bought became my first apartments.
The investing
General partner on a 40-unit in Birmingham, managing partner on an 18-unit in Little Rock, plus single-family and small multifamily in New Jersey and Northeast Florida. From here on, the focus is Alabama.
The question
How do you turn a business you've spent years building into wealth for your family, the kind that doesn't depend on you showing up every day?
If you've built a business, you've probably asked yourself some of these too.
How much of my family's future is tied up in one company?
The business finally throws off more cash than it needs. Where should it go?
Do I really want to buy rentals and deal with tenants and toilets on top of everything else?
What happens if I sell someday? Or what do I do now that I have?
I'm asking the same questions. This site is about how I'm working through them.
